Animal Classification

Web Quest

Introduction

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!  And don’t forget orangutans, giant pandas, and …giraffes!  What do all of these animals have in common?  They are all vertebrates, which can all be classified in the same manner.

Task

You will completely classify three assigned vertebrate from kingdom through species and submit a picture of each one.

Process

  1. You will be assigned three vertebrate to classify.

  2. Use the Big6 research method or the Scientific Method to help in this project.

  3. Write down a list of the classifications you will need to find.

  4. Brainstorm (write down) a list of all possible sources where you could find these classifications and a picture.

  5. Brainstorm (write down) a list of keywords to use in searching indexes, table of contents, OPAC, and the Internet.

  6. In the library, look for these sources:

--in the reference section in regular and science encyclopedias

--in the nonfiction science section

--on the OPAC

  1. On the internet, use these web sites:

Eukaryotic Kingdoms (use left column links)

Animal Diversity Web (type in your animal in the search area and follow the links)

Sea World Animal Information

Classifications of Animals

Metazoa (The Kingdom of Animals)

OR try one of these online encyclopedias on:

 IHS Library web page

  1. Read the information and handwrite the classifications on a sheet of notebook paper with the common name at the top.   You will need three sheets of paper, one for each animal.

  2. In your search, also find a picture of each of your assigned three animals and mount each on a separate page, labeled with the common name of the animal and the scientific name.  Go to the Italy High School Library web page, under Multimedia, search for a photo under AltaVista Images or PicSearch.

  3. Include a bibliography page at the end of the assignment citing all the sources you used to find the classification and the picture.  Use Noodle Tools to help with your bibliography.

  4. Submit a self evaluation on how well you think you did on this assignment.  Include:

--what I did that was really well done

--how will I do it differently next time

--what sources were the most useful

--what sources did I need to do a better job that I didn’t have this time

Evaluation

You will receive 1 quiz grade for this assignment and 1 daily grade for the self evaluation.

Conclusion

At the end of this project you will become an expert on one vertebrate and its classifications.
