Italy High School

WE MUST BEGIN TOGETHER, WITH ALL OUR CHILDREN.

Here in America, we have the most diverse and multicultural society in the world. And, it is doubtful that there is a parent in this country today who is not concerned with the escalating levels of violence, racism and prejudice in our schools. If we do not begin now to address the reasons for this violence and to work closely with our children, then we must be prepared to endure the pain of further tragedies like that of Columbine High School, and other such events. Because, without education and the sense of respect and understanding that comes with age, it is the young who are most likely to act out in a destructive and antisocial manner.

The horrific terrorist attacks against America are further evidence of the profound gulf that exists between the countries of the world. In the words of former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, "Hatred, anger, prejudice and misunderstanding caused this terrible thing." We must now begin to think in global terms, and at the same time to act at the local level. Sweeping global change will begin at the personal level, and it must begin now, with each of us participating to the fullest extent of our capabilities.

Our children deserve the best possible education, and they should be free to attend their schools without fear of violence, racism or prejudice. We all understand that the metal detectors and campus security police are not the answer because they only are a reaction at the surface of the problem. We need workable solutions that reach down to the very roots of this profound problem.

PEOPLE OF THE BOATS is focused on finding solutions and increasing understanding. It has been created as a means of fostering cultural awareness here in America and on a global level.

Yes, today's world is changing, but we must be willing to take responsibility for those changes and work together in a positive, affirmative manner. To give our children the education they deserve, and to help them become global citizens and take on the stewardship of the planet, is important work that must be done in our schools and in our homes as well.

PEOPLE OF THE BOATS projects have been designed to not only engage the interest of the student participants in the educational system, but also to establish a firm intergenerational connection within the home. It is there that the process of establishing positive cultural values begins and will continue to flourish.

STUDENT EXERCISES have been designed for use in grades four through twelve. Educators find that they are able to easily customize the wide variety of stand-alone project modules. Each exercise has been optimized to facilitate exploration, appreciation and discussion of cultural diversity in the classroom environment. Twenty interesting and imaginative teacher-led projects are devoted to elements such as oral presentation, literature, fine art, music, poetry, theater, creative writing, dance, photography and film making.
